In the early 1989 Imam Khomeini sent a letter to Mikhail Gorbachev, the leader of Union of Socialist Soviet Republics in which besides speaking of imminence of collapse of Marxism and Communism he invited Gorbachev to monotheism and warned him against falling into the arms of Western capitalism.

With his profound divine insight Imam Khomeini wrote, “It’s clear to everyone that we should find Communism in world’s political history museum, since Marxism can answer none of the real needs of human, it’s a materialistic school and Materialism can’t draw humankind out from ir-religiosity crisis, which is the main suffering in West and East.” He also warned, “…If you hope, at this juncture, to cut the economic Gordian knots of socialism and communism by appealing to the center of Western capitalism, you will, far from remedying any ill of your society, commit a mistake which those to come will have to erase”.

“For, if Marxism has come to a deadlock in its social and economic policies, capitalism has also bogged down, in this, though in a different form, as well as in other respects.” Imam Khomeini finally invited Gorbachev to Islam, “After mentioning these problems and preliminary points, let me call on you to study Islam earnestly, not because Islam and the Muslims may need you but because Islam has exalted universal values which can bring comfort and salvation to all nations and remove the basic problems of mankind.” Iranian delegation led by Ayatollah Javadi Amoli arrived Moscow on 3 January 1988 to convey Imam Khomeini’s message and clarify its deep content.

Ayatollah Javadi Amoli summarized Gorbachev’s answers to the letter in some statements:

1) I ‘m thankful of Ayatollah Khomeini’s letter
2) I’ll send an answer to this letter as soon as possible.
3) We’ll convey its gist to Soviet’s clergymen.
4) We are on the way of approbation of religion freedom in Soviet.
5) I have claimed before that despite having different ideologies we can have peaceful relationship.
6) Imam Khomeini invited us to Islam; do we have to invite him to our school of thought? (now he smiled and went on,”this is a joke.”)
7) This invitation is interference in the internal affairs of a country, because every country is free for selecting its school of thought.

The main paragraph of Gorbachev’s answer, paragraph 7, pointed to his political reaction to the letter which was responded by Ayatollah Amoli in this way: “We appreciate the freedom of religion and hope an amicable condition for all people to live with each other as they have different schools of thought. But “the issue of interfering” should be clarified. You are free to do what you want in the vast land of Russia to the end of its skies and no one has the right to interfere in this realm. But the content of this letter, as the messages of other divine leaders, had nothing to do with materialism and the territory of Russia; it was just related to your souls… and the contents of Imam Khomeini’s message is an invitation to monotheism and denying of atheism which is related to your soul, it has nothing to do to your country. Indeed when a person’s soul believed in monotheism, he will find the correct way of ruling a country and he’ll do this job in the best order.”

This political reaction and unresponsiveness to profound content of Imam Khomeini’s message soon led to collapse of Soviet Communism and thereafter Communism should be searched in the world’s political history museums, as predicted by Imam Khomeini.
