One of the terrorist groups was smashed in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan with the cooperation of local residents, the deputy head of Internal Security Department at the Intelligence Ministry said on Saturday evening.
The group, which was supported by some regional countries, had planned to insecure roads near the city of Iranshahr by detonating up to 150 kilograms of explosives, the unnamed official said.
He added that another terrorist cell, which had planned to commit acts of terror, was busted in West Azerbaijan Province.
He went on to say that a large number of weapons and ammunition were seized from the two terrorist groups.
Earlier on November 16, Iran’s Minister of Intelligence Seyed Mahmoud Alavi announced that the country’s security forces had managed to smash and capture members of several other terrorist groups within the lunar Islamic month of Muharram (October 15- November 12).
Speaking in a gathering of Sunni and Shiite clerics in western Iranian province of Kurdistan, Alavi hailed the country’s intelligence supremacy, saying the ministry’s intelligence forces busted 10 terrorist groups during Muharram, when Shiite people mourn the martyrdom anniversary of their third Imam, Hussein ibn Ali (AS).
